What is Community Solar?
Community solar is a relatively new concept which allows low to moderate income (LMI) residents to reap the benefits of solar without needing to invest in their own private solar array. There is absolutely no equipment installation, no change to your lights or service, and no change to your relationship with your utility company. Subscribing to a solar garden is free and allows Xcel Energy customers to save up to 10% on their monthly electric bill.

How does the Community Solar Program work?
Community solar projects help utility companies comply with new legislation requiring them to have 50% of their customers on some form of renewable energy by 2025, and 100% by 2050. In an effort to meet these mandates, Xcel Energy works with solar developers to get customers subscribed to solar gardens near them.

This sounds too good to be true. What’s the catch?
Community Solar has been around for over 15 years and there are a few key reasons why the industry has continued to grow exponentially over the past 10 years. The main reason customers are able to save money by subscribing to a solar garden is because the solar gardens are able to make a profit when someone subscribes. It generally costs solar gardens $30 to produce $100 worth of energy with their industrial grade solar panels, this energy is referred to as “solar credits". Solar credits are applied to the subscriber's electric bill, and the solar garden charges the subscriber for those credits at the discounted rate. For example, your electric bill from your utility company is $100, you receive $100 of solar credits applied to your bill. Your amount due to your utility is now $0. The solar garden then charges you $90 for the solar credits. In this example you saved $10 and the solar garden made $60.

How long does the process take?
Subscribing is normally a quick and easy process that can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. Once subscribed it can take 3 months to take affect on your utility bill.

How long do I get the discount?
It is free to subscribe and free to cancel most Community Solar subscriptions. Once subscribed you can expect to receive a discount for 20-25 years which is the average lifespan of a solar garden.

What if the solar garden is damaged?
Community Solar gardens utilize high grade industrial PV solar panels which are extremely durable. If however, a natural disaster wiped out an entire solar garden, subscribers are not be responsible for any damages incurred. The subscribers would not receive a discount until the solar garden is back up and running.

Can I subscribe if I already have solar panels on my property?
Yes, as long as the output of your solar panels do not cover 100% of your monthly electric bill.

Yes, depending on the location of your commercial property you are eligible to subscribe to a community solar garden.
